A Brief History of Don Wright’s Music

I’ve been writing songs for about 50 years.  The songs on these albums go back as far as 1980.  Most of them, however, are from the last 20 years or so.  As the volumes progress, the percentage of more recent songs is increasing because I’m still writing new ones.

In 2014, I finally decided to catalog at least a hundred or so songs – record them as best and fully-realized as I could and be done with them, so to speak. For so many years they’ve been sitting around, as words on paper mostly, or I’d bring some out and sing them for someone.

I have performed them in clubs and coffee houses, both solo and in groups, and they float out there in the air and then they’re gone.  Recording each of them is something I’ve been putting off for a long time and has been very fulfilling.  But soon I can move on to writing all new material for maybe one new album a year, as long as the flow continues.

Purpose

So this project and this website’s purpose is to share my songs with those who might enjoy my version of them as the writer and also with recording artists or others in the entertainment industry who would like to interpret them in their own way.  Selling the albums is somewhat secondary although welcomed.

Folk/Rock, Rhythm and Blues

I am often asked, “What kind of music is it?”  Please contact me if you have a response to that question because I’ve never had a definitive answer for it.  I have been influenced by rock and roll, blues, folk, country, jazz, Mexican rancheras, and hillbilly rap, to name a few.  Influences range from Bob Wills to Bob Dylan.  From Mose Allison to Van Morrison.  From Merle Haggard to The Band.

I was born in San Francisco, grew up a couple hundred miles south on the Central Coast of California in ‘the sixties’ and have a special place inside for that time in music history.

The songs started coming through me and I would write them down.  Sometimes there is a melody attached, as they are revealed to me, but always there is a rhythm in the words.

And Now…

Since 2018, we’ve been living in California and working out of Studio44.  We’ve completed 6 more albums as of October 2024.  Currently working on Volume 15 – Layin’ in the Weeds.
